Project Runway 8 Episode 3: It's Party Time!

  • Gretchen – This looked like what Kate Moss would probably wear. Super urban and hip. Who cares if she’s a bitch - the fact that she managed to do separates and integrated them so beautifully, and the fact that she has already won two challenges, warrants her to become one.
  • Andy – There was a very creative use of the ribbons. Styling was modern and edgy. His ambitiousness either makes or breaks him, judging from the previous few episodes.
  • Valerie – I loved the symmetry of this dress. This exudes a confident and sexy quality.
  • Michael C. – This was bold and brilliant. I liked how he played with the textures.
  • Christopher – Considering this was purely made out of napkins, I would say this was very elegant and charming. It might be hard for him to emerge at the top, because the judges hardly pick up on the minute details of his practical, well-constructed though not over-the-top pieces.
  • April – This was very Gaga-esque. I guess she was aiming for something fractured and edgy, and so this works to her advantage.
  • Mondo – It was laudable how he made use of plates to come up with the bodice. Furthermore, it acts as a nice contrast to the cute skirt.
  • Peach – She is finally improving! The top is definitely boring, but I like the layers of petals of the skirt.
AJ – A risk which didn’t pay off. He probably just wanted a fun party dress, but this was overkill. I can’t believe he tried placing blame on the model’s boobs.
  • Ivy – This looks so bulky on the model! The skirt should have been shorter, and the colour should have been something more striking for a party dress.
  • Michael D. – He used tin foil roasting pans for the skirt, like what? You should see the back of the dress – looks awful.
  • Casanova – This was absolutely WTF. He went ahead with the use of tablecloths even when Tim Gunn advised them not to, he sliced up plush puppies to dig out the cotton, and this was what he produced. Too much to handle.
  • Kristin – Oh god. The colour palette is good, but the overall product is hideous! She should stop embracing her mistakes and start crafting respectable pieces.
  • Sarah – She followed Gretchen’s expert advice and dumped the pink for the teal. The end product was thus sad and flat.

Top 3: Gretchen, Valerie and Andy
Winner: Andy South
Bottom 3: Casanova, Sarah and AJ
Eliminated: Sarah Trost

Letters To Juliet

In a nutshell: Aspiring writer Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is engaged to New York restauranteur Victor (Gael Garcia Bernal). His hectic schedule meant that a trip to Tuscany has to serve as a pre-wedding honeymoon. Sophie feels neglected and lonely until she meets the secretaries of Juliet, the women who answer the letters left in the Verona courtyard of Shakespeare's heroine.
Sophie discovers a letter left there in 1957, and her reply prompts Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) and her grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan) to arrive in search of Claire's long lost love Lorenzo.
  • Redgrave stole the entire show with her conviction and natural warmth, making the otherwise silly story very touching. She is already 73, yet she is able to make cheesy pronouncments like 'destiny wanted us to meet again' sound heartfelt.
  • Food for thought: Why would Charlie, a high-flying lawyer who should be busy safeguarding human rights and defending the penniless, be so free as to escort Granny on a journey to rediscover her long lost love?
  • Amanda Seyfried seems to be a very impulsive romantic in the movies she star in. Just like in Mamma Mia, she can't resist meddling in other people's love lives.
Nevertheless, this movie is a guilty pleasure for the romantics.

Larger Than Life

The designers were asked to design a look exemplifying what they thought was the vibe of Marie Claire magazine. The winner of the challenge would have their look put on a billboard to advertise Marie Claire. Also, each designer was taken to a photo shoot to have their look photographed for a feel of what it would look like editorial-wise.

The Top Half [click image to enlarge!]

Valerie – Loved the collar, loved the colour palette. This was the clear-cut winner in my opinion.
Christopher – Minor adjustments to the look of the skirt would’ve improved the overall aesthetic.
Casanova – This was a GREAT improvement from the previous challenge. Chic, elegant and sophisticated. Some might find it too much of the 80s though.
Mondo – He obviously thought about the photo shoot, but the polka dot bib seriously shouldn’t be there.

Michael C – A simple and flirty dress, though it didn’t particularly address the challenge requirement.
Gretchen – Other than the intriguing low neckline, I thought this jumpsuit shouldn’t have been the winning outfit. Don’t see how this depicts a Marie Claire woman.
Andy – The top was pretty and feminine, with well-tailored sleeves. Quite ambivalent about the pants though - it has a fluid and modern feel, but doesn’t come together well with the elegance of the top.
Michael D – I like the texture of the fabric. The look would’ve been nicer if the suit extended beyond the crotch area.

The Bottom Half

April – I see some fitting problems there with her right breast. Very dull – the colours don’t compliment each other very well.
Ivy – Absolute blah.
Sarah – She looked pregnant. Yellow shoes totally didn’t help in the styling!
A.J – Too grunge. The fitting was terrible, and he concurred with that as well, that the bottom of the dress looked as if the model was impregnated by some alien creature.
Nicholas – The skirt was nicely designed, but the cape and blouse ruined it all.
Peach – Stodgy and matronly. Not flattering at all.
Kristin – Terrible colour palette. All the material seems to be thrown onto the model.
Jason – I’d let the picture speak for itself. And to think he blamed his model for not selling his awful and bulky design.
Winner: Gretchen
Eliminated: Jason and Nicholas

Project Runway 8 Season Debut

For their first challenge, the designers were asked to take an article of clothing from their suitcase, and incorporate it into their final design. They were then asked pass their article of clothing to the designer standing to the right of them.

The Good (from L to R):

  • Andy - Deserved to win this challenge. Effectively showcased his personal aesthetic through his kimono-ish outfit, accompanied by the hat, all of which were designed in 5 hours.
  • Michael D
  • Christopher - Liked both Michael D's and his color palettes.
  • AJ - Modern, but Seth Aaron does a better job at such genres.
  • Gretchen (Challenge Winner) - I'm shocked how such a simple dress, which didn't really incorporate the material that was given to her, could win her the first challenge.

The Okay:

  • Peach - She reminds me of Sweet P.
  • Michael C
  • April
  • Nicholas
  • Kristin - She keeps saying 'I work with my mistakes'. Hello, her design was an absolute mistake.
  • McKell - Initially, during the Tim Gunn inspection, this was the only outfit that stood out for me. I thought it looked cute and contemporary, very wearable. The bad choice of accesories and styling did her in, although I think those weren't justifiable excuses to get her eliminated from the first challenge.

The bad:

  • Valerie - This looks like a fashionable version of my LBV vest.
  • Ivy - The judges are going to remember her as the designer who 'made pants out of [Peach's] pants'. Not a good thing. And it's also not a good thing that she gets very defensive during judging.
  • Sarah - The crotch area of the outfit was quite an eyesore.
  • Mondo - His outfit screams old-fashioned!!
  • Casanova - He might as well have sent a naked silhouette down the runway.
  • Jason - Hello, even I could come up with something like this. All he had to do was to flip around Andy's kimono and drape it in the most random fashion possible.

Winner: Gretchen

Eliminated: McKell
