all good things must come to an end

INTERHOUSE DEBATES CHAMPION : BUCKLEY TEAM 1

This house believes that in our world, there is no more Auspicium melioris aevi (hope of a better age)
We were doing opposition.

The prop kept attacking us on capitalism, saying that it is widening the poverty gap btwn 1st world and 3rd world countries. Guess how i rebutted that:

"That is NOT true. Capitalism now has decreased!"

Genevive matthews and the whole crowd was laughing nonstop. i was like, oh did i say something wrong?
I thought that seriously screwed my team up. But marvin and jiawei said my style was ok and my strucutre and everything was alright, so i guess that factual error didn't really affect the decision much.

And truly, it didn't. Nigel Fong was awarded best speaker for the 2nd time, and Ashish also had a best speaker once. i was really really happy when i received the news at rj performing arts centre from wangye. i was like 'ARE YOU SERIOUS?' then i kept laughing gahh.

Sec 1 Debates: 5th place
Sec 2 Debates : 3rd place
Sec 3 Debates : 1st place!!!! YAY!

its really ironic. coz as i get older, i get lesser best speakers award haha. but well at least we win and i took up the challenge of 3rd speaker, which i think ashish and nigel stand a very high chance in taking that position when they reach sec 3.

And after the debates ended, mrs smith approached me and asked if i was intersted in joining The Arena. its some mediacorp organized debates competition, meaning u will get to appear on TV. HOW COOL IS THAT. then like lena said, all the topics may be like THBT all singaporeans are kiasu or something.

Here, i really really really really need to thank the following people:

Marvin, the buckley in-charge, and also the very new HOUSE CAPTAIN! thanks for all your support and your great leadership! thanks also for holding all the sessions and case preparations. our team would have died without you. thanks a lot!

My team! Kenneth, Ashish and Nigel!!! thanks for the great times we spent and our successive wins! CHEERS! you guys are one bunch of talent man.

Jiawei! thanks for never failin to entertain me for yr chairing speeches. totally hilarious. and also thanks for the helpful tips and guidance u've given me.

Also to all devoted supporters, yishu, samuel, gabriel, yuzhou and teachers miss cho and mrs ong. THANKS A MILLION for always supporting us! And there, we have accomplished something we once only dreamt of!!

Raffles Institution Guitar Ensemble - RAGE XI\

once debates ended, i rushed ALLLL the way from ri to rjc. tiring eh.
frankly speaking, i wasn't full prepared at all. AT ALL. meaning i didn't attend any rehearsals, i only had jamming twice with bandmates, meaning no preparation in short.
besides that, i had a fever 2 days ago and just recovered from my pathetic sore throat, which could been seen in my debate speech. so u all have to pardon me ahah.

did ok for hotel california, other than the hiccups with my egg-like macaras which some of them laughed when i shook it haha. many people like that performance and i liked it too. coz it wasn't straining on my vocals. but it was like a bit too safe. hhaa.

then came the rock band perofmance. that one seriuosly received extreme reviews. some found me shouting, some tot thats what rock's supposed to be, some tot i should have used a moer airy voice, some tot i should stick to choir, some tot i could be a singapore idol. HAHA. what do you expect me to listen. personally, i tot that wasn't my best lah coz i just recovered from my sickness. secondly, i didn't figure out on mike control coz i DIDN'T ATTEND any rehearasl and so i appeared a bit too loud so the whole dynamics of the band was pretty off. but for the shouting part, i tot it was ok lor. maybe i could've been edgier or airier, but if i was airier then its very hard to hear myself. and besides the genre is a genre that requires u to shout and engage the audience.

so in all i appreciate the opinions, and i'll definitely try harder next time.
P.S to this particularly irritating sec 4, can you just shut up. u irritate the hell out of me. ok lah yr band wins. but if u can't even sing or wasn't even asked to perform, then keep quiet. coz i can't stand jerks.

Having dealth with tt, i again have MANY MANY MANY PEOPLE TO THANK!

Ari and family, for your warm hospitality and your concern and understanding. THANKS SO MUCH!
Other bandmates, hiok hong, zhihao, jonho, linky. thanks so much for the jamming sessions. really was exposed to a whole new world of music.
thanks xiaoyu and reynard, for helping me get supporters coz i didn't have any tickets to distribute!
thanks to all those who came down! marvin, jiawei, vanessa, yingjie, xin'er, alaric, lionel, choir friends (chris, kersheng, kialiang, wenjun, bryancai, jorel, isaac) and subsequent supper mates (chenhoon, anshing, yuhui, lena, cheeyong). if i left yr name out, i'm sorry! theres just so many names!

THANKS GUYS FOR EVERYTHING!

coz this is one day that'll i'll never never forget.

24 August 2006

Jubilance

Why am i happy?
1) Buckley Team 1, consisting of Nigel, Ashish, Kenneth and Me are in the finals for this year's interhouse debates! YAY! i simply couldn't believe it. took an entirely new approach for 3rd speaker this time round. i was like super steady and calm lol, different from the rushed-kancheong me. so unlike me. and so we'll be meeting Hullett team again for the finals.

Prelim Round 1: This House would Sue McDonalds (Prop) - Won against Bayley team 1
Prelim Round 2: This House would Sue McDonalds (Opp) - Lost to Hullett team 1
Semi-finals: This House Would Televise Criminal Trials (Prop) - Won against Moor team 1
Finals: This House Believes that in our world, there is no more Auspicium Melioris Aevi (Opp) against Hullett Team 1

HOW COOL! i still rmb in sec 1, we got last. sec 2, climbed up to third spot. and this year, with 10 participating teams, my team actually got thru to the finals! gr8 job guys. thanks marvin and jiawei for the guidance. and my teammates!

2) Performance @ RIGE Concert.
Yep. doing a few songs. kinda new to the whole rock band thing. so if i'm not up to standard, please forgive me. haha. and my throat is dying. damn.
Songs that i might be performing
1) Hotel California - The Eagles
2) Slither - Velvet Revolver (or is Slither the band name?)
3) Juicebox - The Strokes
4) Day Tripper - The Beatles

Now i really got to love my mouth again. coz its doing me much good. and i realize how useless you are if u can't play an instrument in a band. u feel like some idiot. HAHA.
Hope i can get to see familiar faces on that day!

~~~~I LOVE DMP~~~~
Logically Speaking
ok. sincerely. logically speaking sucks. coz they give you arguments and they want you to draw truth-tables which are totally redundant. would i even draw a truth-table when i am caught up in a heated argument. by the time i figure out whether my argument is valid or not valid, i'd have died by then.
today's chinese songwritigin thing was quite fun. showed us how to compose songs and nosense. and also, choir today was crazy. 1 out of 4 sopranos in a 30+ choir. HAHHAAHA and we did ok we survived!
anyway, idol analysis shall be summarized in a few sentences:
jasmine improved.
joakim, sadly hasn't. and h'ell be in bottom 2 with paul, who will be out i hope, coz he was sincerely way out of tune, even worse vocally than joakim.
best was hady, who suprisingly had a lot of supporters.
OK! A POST FOR TODAY.
interhouse debates
YES! we're in the semi-finals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks ashish, kenneth and nigel for all the hard work you guys have put in. so sry about the 2nd debate which i think i screwed it up, but well, lets move on and challenge all odds competing with the currently 1st-placed moor team yeah!!! keep it up!!
*thanks mcdonalds too*
after which, went to yuzhou's concert for SE. lol, good thing i didn't sincerely fall asleep. hahaha. but seriuosly, i think the pieces should be a little shorter, coz my attention span is very short too. hah, but goodjob anyway yuzhou!!
supper went to macs. how cool is that.
10 August 2006
Enchantress: 12 kills. 0 deaths.
GREAT. rahimah is out. WOWWWW.
joakim (whom i once supported) is actually SAFE.
nurul and jasmine too! O.M.GOD.
anyway, i shall not let myself be irritated over such small matters. THis is just the 21st century man. and besides, where did star idol winner bryan wong go to? NOWHERE! =)
08 August 2006
yay *gives a jasmine tye wave*
i'm a homey!!!
i really don't have much to say
except for these:
1) i think i did well for choir interview (praying hard praying hard)
2) i HOPED the exco thinks i did well (praying hard praying hard)
3) I HOPE buckley debates will emerge victorious (i had sick of gettin fifth)
4) RISE on friday (maybe i can go home first b4 walking to UCC)
5) LAN saga (very controversial. people wanna play different games and gets really messy. makes people get mood swings too. oh gosh.)
6) today was one of the most boring national day celebrations in my school life. performance by school band was oh-so-boring (even with the nicholas chong guy), erm crossword nonsense (which we decorated fairly decent), and some lame transport talk cum quiz. oh my god, please don't ever let student volunteers conduct such major events.
03 August 2006
wannabe
okok make it quick. bottom 3 predictions: jay (out), jasmine, paul.
i am addicted to 'wannabe' after jasmine performed it dammit.
YO TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT I WANNA TELL YOU WHAT YOU WANT WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT I WANNA I WANNA I WANNA I WANNA I WANNA REALLY REALLY REALLY WANNA ZIGGAZZZIGGG AHHHH.
other than the great number of increasing projects and performance tasks and TAs, nothing impressive happened recently. except for the fact that buckley got 2nd for sec 3 cross country which is indeeeeed a marvel. and choir comm elections coming soon. so excited. sometimes i wonder why do i really want it soo soo bad. i'm still thinking about it.
